April 2000

Apr 1 - Mock Cafe
No crowd tonight. Did a pretty good set. Stuff on my mind.

Apr 8 - Java N More
Jean didn't show up, so I got to host. I didn't get a chance to psych myself up for my set, so I started real cold, but got rolling towards the end. Saw some very funny people I hadn't seen before.

Apr 8 - Mock Cafe
Got to host again. Again, I didn't take the time to prep myself before the show. I was scheduled to go 7th. Great crowd tonight. Lots of people and they were laughers.

Apr 9 - thoughts
Things change. And the more they change, the more they stay the same. I will not be doing as many shows over the next few months. I am starting a business that I have had in the back of my head for a while. I'll still make it out at least once a week, and I'll do my best to keep baycomedy up to speed.

Apr 15 - Java N More
Had a very good set tonight. I was loose. I was prepared. I had fun. I starts out wearing my wrestling mask, and started with a bit about how I would be good as one of those wrestlers who always gets beat up. It went over well. Especially with the young'uns. I transitioned from that to my Neighbor Bob story. Got some good laughs, and even better reactions from some of the other comedians. That much honesty on stage is just too much for some people. Also, I want to thank Jean for letting me go on for so long. Thanks.
Apr 15 - Mock Cafe
Well it's just one of those nights. Had another good set. I ended weak but got some solid laughs from the small crowd. Did the wrestling opening again. I don't remember what I did after that. I'll have to listen to the tape.

Apr 22 - Java N More
Another very good set. I had some fun new material. I connected well with the few audience members.

Apr 22 - Mock Cafe
The first four minutes went great. I tried too hard to end on a big laugh which back-fired on me. There was a huge crowd tonight. People were standing all the way to the back of the club, and they were there to laugh.

There are different levels of funny. There isn't anything concrete that separates these levels, and they are unique to each comedian. You perform for a long time and one day you realize that you're funnier than you used to be. Mostly it's the side-effect of getting stage time. For me these stages are measured in years, for others it's measured in months, sometimes weeks. At tonight's show I saw one of those people. A few months ago when I first saw this comedian I thought he was terrible. A few weeks later I saw him again and got what he was trying to do. It still wasn't funny to me, but some people were laughing. Then a few months later he was making me, and everyone else laugh. And he was writing new material. Tonight he moved to next level. He was over-the-edge funny. He took what he has been doing and twisted it into a routine that had people laughing till they cried. It was a sight to see.

Apr 27 - Brainwash Cafe
Good crowd. I did some material that I was worried would turn off the audience, but they went along with it. It amazes me that I'm able to talk about this stuff on stage. I'm a very private person. Alot of this stuff is very embarrassing. Most of this stuff I have never told anyone other than my wife. But when I get on stage it just spews out. It's like the audience is my best friend who also happens to be my therapist.

Anyway, thanks for laughing. It means alot to me.

Apr 29 - Java N More
Another good set. I actually made the couple in front laugh so hard they cried. I felt like Freddy Fender. OK, dumb joke. It feels good to get that much of a reaction. It makes all those years of blanks stares worth it.

Apr 29 - Mock Cafe
Big pile of comedians. Seventeen comedians signed up for ten spots. So comics, remember to get there late, so I can get a spot. Smallish crowd but they laughed. I went off on some old material, but got some good laughs. Good applause at the end.
