June 2000
- Sat Jun 3 - Mock Cafe
- Had a good set. I had only one thing prepped, but a bunch of new stuff
flowed out. There was a small crowd, nearly all comedians, but I got some
very good laughs. Then I looked up to see how much time I had left and
standing at the back of the room was Robin Williams. I got a smile out of
him when I talked about my poodle watching me pee.
So we got to see Robin Williams do a set. As he got on stage a comedian in
the audience spoke up that he didn't want to follow Robin. So Robin got
off stage and let the comedian do a set. I was in a similar situation
years ago with a well-known pair of married comedians back in Iowa. They
were not so nice to the open mikers, and stood on stage and heckled the
comedians as they performed. It was not fun to watch. I abandoned my set
and trashed the husband for 15 minutes. That was fun.
So we got to see Robin Williams do a set. In between his ad-libs he was
trying out some new material. Not all of it worked, though most of it did.
It was interesting to watch Mr. Williams face when a joke didn't work.
Most comedians who reach his celebrity would not so hard to make a set so
tight. He doesn't cruise for a minute.
- Tue Jun 6 - Luggage Store
- Fun stuff. I haven't been here for a while. The audience was all
comedians but few of them have seen me before so most of them laughed.
- Sat Jun 10 - Club Car
- Really fun stuff. It's a shame that this place is going away. It's a
great room. There were some non-comedians there and were really into the
show. Many funny people. I had a really good set. I was having so much
fun.
- Sat Jun 17 - Mock Cafe
- Ragged set tonight. I didn't do enough preparation before the show.
I have this kind of ritual I do before a show, but I'm trying not to
become dependent on it. I tried too hard last night. Also I didn't let
myself flow during my set. I kept stepping out and trying to do certain
bits, even when they didn't come naturally.
- Also I have to apologize to the guy who came up to me and said that
he reads this web site. I wasn't very receptive. Sorry, I was having an
off night.
