- Sea Biscuit - 8/4/01
- This was part of the comedy marathon. Had a really bad set. OK, it wasn't that
bad. At least one person laughed at each punchline. One punchline nearly got two
people to laugh.
So the booking thing is starting to be a drag. I hate saying no to my friends. In some
cases I have been unable to say no. It's the on-going responsibility that I don't like.
I'm not adverse to some responsibility, but I'm a little overwhelmed. I have a day job
that takes up 50 or so hours a week. 15 to 20 hours a week spent commuting. I have my
family, my house, my dogs. Cars that need to be smogged. I barely have time to write, and
I have almost no time for comedy. So I'm going to be passing the booking duties off to
some worthy individuals, starting with the October show. It's been fun. I put together
some great shows. But it's not what I want to.
- Thoughts - 8/10/01
- Negative energy is its own reward. The San Leandro gig got canceled. Weird that just
as I was giving up on the gig for my own reasons, the gig fails for other reasons.
- Mock Cafe - 8/11/01
- Had a pile of fun tonight. Talked about my experience with Neighbor Bob back in Iowa.
Some people were a little put off with the subject matter, but by the end I had them won
over. The crowd was great. About a dozen non-comedians. Saw a couple of relative new-comers
do fantastic sets. I love watching new comedians develop. I have this strange underdog thing.
People love cheering for the underdog, but I take it another level. I rarely watch major
league sports. I prefer the minor leagues. There is a different energy. There is alot less
distance from the audience to the players. It's the same for me with comedy. This will sound
weird, but I am not a fan of comedy clubs. There are exceptions, but for the most part comedy
clubs are like the major leagues. The comedians are funny, but they are soooo polished, and
practiced. The alternative comedy shows may not always be as funny, but for me they are much
realer. (realer, it's a word!)
- Mock Cafe - 8/18/01
- Only two non-comedians in the audience, and they were friends of a comedian. Had no
motivation to do a good set, and so I didn't. I really had nothing I wanted to talk about,
so I slapped together a few of my beer jokes. Got a few laughs, but it wasn't fun.
- Comedy Day - 8/19/01
- Didn't go. Just couldn't get it together to go see all the same people doing all the same
jokes. Last years show was the best comedy day show I have seen. In addition to the usual suspects
they threw a some newer comedians into the mix. This year they have abandoned that. Jim Short
and Arj Barker being the exceptions. I'm not saying the other comedians aren't funny, because
they are. I would just like to see some new faces.
