June 2006

6/27/06 Traffic:
Nearly got arrested today for defending myself against a cab speeding through a red light. No wonder so many pedestrians die every year on the streets of San Francisco.

6/18/06 Racing:
Went to the kart track for my father's day present. It was way fun as usual. I started right behind this guy and had a ball trying to pass him, but since this was just a practice after a few laps they gave him the move over flag. So I passed him, but then he hung on my tail. One of the course workers then gave me the move over flag. I knew it was a mistake, but I let the guy pass because I didn't want to get black flagged. A lap later the same course worker gave the other guy the move over flag. This time though I managed to put some distance between us. I wound up breaking both my one lap and lap average records. (Even the races I did when I weighed 20 pounds less.)

6/17/06 Stuff:
The worst seems to be over for my wife. She's able to eat regularly again. Her sleep has improved. She's recovering from pain much more quickly. My outlook is improving.

6/16/06 Freelance:
I applied for a free-lance writing gig last week. I haven't heard from him so I assume he's not impressed with my audition. See, the gig was to write a limerick that this guy would use as his ice-breaker when making speeches. This is the sample of my work that I sent:
There once was a man named Tom,
who thought he could write with aplomb.
He applied for this job.
If rejected he'll sob.
If accepted he'll break out in song.

6/15/06 Sports:
Today, between doctor appointments, I actually watched four guys play dominoes on ESPN2. Day-time TV rocks!

6/14/06 Work and Stuff:
My ability to cope with the mundanities of the work day has been stretched beyond function. I'm being an asshole at work and I hate it. It's just that the scale of problems at work, when compared to real life, amount to nothing. Yet people are so passionate about their little projects. At the same time I'm going through this weird split role. I complain about the impending corporate indoctrination campaign, and at the same time complain how people aren't working for the company's collective good. Perhaps it's merely the method I don't like. Obviously I don't disagree with the goal. Perhaps I just don't understand people's workaday motives.

6/11/06 Writing:
Working on a new ghost story that has started very well. I've fallen in love with the characters already. The other short story in the works has been put on hold till I finish the ghost story. I think I need to create something happy before I finish making something so ugly. Create a balance.

6/5/06 News:
Welcome to the revised tomflanders.com. With so much going on in my life I just had to trim the site a bit. Okay, a bunch. The focus of my life is my writing and I want the site to reflect that. Sorry to all the fans of the other stuff. I just don't have the time to keep it up.

5/8/06 Short Story: Things To Do
The story of a woman completing the list of her life.
