July 98
- July 3 - One World Cafe
- Once again I let the petty distractions distract me. I wasn't able to try
my new preparation ritual, because I got introduced two spots before I
expected. Apparently people had other people sign them up, and then they
didn't show. So I have to jump on stage, not fully prepared. The lesson here
is to keep track of the list and watch for no-shows.
- July 7 - Luggage Store
- Another good set. The material I'm getting from work is going to carry
me for a while. There is just so much funny stuff happening there. Also, I'm
excited about what I have to tell the audience and that translates into good
sets.
- I was able to do my preparation ritual, but it was kind of forced. I was
concentrating more on the preparation, then what I was preparing for.
- July 11 - Java N More
- A good combination of new material and good preparation. Unfortunately
I forgot two of my new jokes, but I recovered by going into my basketball
routine.
- July 24 - One World Cafe
- Raggedy set tonight. Had some good new material, and got some good
laughs from it. But my energy was way off. My sister was supposed to come to
the show, she's never seen me on stage, and she didn't make it because she
had to have umbrella drinks and some fancy Nob Hill hotel. Makes you feel
important.
- OK, I know that sounded bitter, but I have a big problem with people not
coming through on their promises to me. It happens to me all the time, and
because of it I do not trust people. And unfortunately nearly always when I
do allow myself to trust someone, they let me down. The reason that I am
telling you this is that I realized from this that I don't trust the
audience. I don't allow myself the emotional attachment to the audience that
is probably necessary.
- July 26 - Punchline
- I asked the showcase booker what the new procedure for getting a spot
on the showcase was. He told me that he would have to see me perform in
the showcase before he let me perform in the showcase. How can you argue
with logic like that?
- July 28 - Reading the newspaper
- WARNING: RANT AHEAD!
OK, so here is this ad for the comedy day in the park. And this is not
aimed at the many funny comedians who will be performing. But someone needs
to tell the people who put this show together to wake up and smell the
coffee. The problem is 95% of the comedians are male. Yes ONE
female comedian. (Who also happens to be the only Asian comedian.) Of all
the great female comedians who have made their way through SF they could only
get one to perform at comedy day. The other problem is that 70% of the
comedians are white(non-hispanic). Lets hear it for diversity. YEE HAH!
For a metric on this problem I looked at the list from a recent open mike
show. Below is a comparison.
- July 28 - Luggage Store
- Pretty good set. My energy was a little off, but the new material is
working out great. I went up 18th and was a little tired.
- July 29 - Tyrone's
- The last Wednesday night show. Unfortunately there was almost no audience
when I went up. Also my sister no-showed again. So I was emotionally wiped
out.
