August 99

Aug 3 - Ireland's 32
This was a fun one. The audience was small, but into the show. I did a nice combination of old and new material. Most of it did very well. The only problem was I drank two beers before my set. I don't think anyone noticed, but my timing was off on a few bits. I've got to not drink before I go up. If you've never been to Ireland's you should go. It has a nice stage and sound system, and many of the town's funniest can be found there.

Aug 5 - Brainwash
I went up 24th, and there was still an audience. This is a great venue. A laundromat bar restaurant with live entertainment. Parts of the crowd were transient, but groups of people stayed through nearly the whole show. I did mostly the same set as at Ireland's. It went well, and I found that the audience here was willing to do a little thinking, and liked the cerebral humor.

Aug 7 - Java N More
Last week there was a huge crowd. This week, none. I did my set for three comedians, the owner, and one guy reading a newspaper who only looked up when I mentioned Rene Magritte. But I had fun. The new material needs some work, but I was able to carry the weak material with energy and good delivery.

Aug 7 - Mock Cafe
Good audience tonight. Most of them were sitting there like puppies waiting for a treat. Like "oh boy more jokes!" It was wonderful. The new material went much better, like saying it out loud at Java N More showed me what needed to be changed. I know I'm supposed to rehearse before I try out new jokes, but I need the audience's feedback to really know what's funny and what's not.

Aug 7 - Java Source
Yes, my first threefer! Three shows in one night. I've had problems with this room in the past, but had a real good set tonight. Because of my past problems, I opted away from the new material and did a couple security blanket bits. Boxing and basketball. They went over very well. Of course one thing that really helped was that this was my first time at Java Source when they actually had a microphone.

Aug 10 - Luggage Store
Fun, but I was very tired from work and I was trying too hard. The Nazi joke went too far. It was funny, but I think it's a bit too mean for me.

Aug 13 - Mambo Mambo
Not a great set. Almost all comedians. Those who weren't comedians were talking loudly. There was loud music playing upstairs. But I got some laughs.

Aug 15 - Comedy Day in the Park
Great show. For the first time I was able to visualize myself up there on the stage. I learned that trick from my wife. If I can visualize something clearly, then I can make it happen.

Aug 21 - Java N More
A pretty good set tonight, though I relied too much on my notes. Small crowd, but they laughed.

Aug 21 - Mock Cafe
This is going to sound weird, but I love it when comedians tell me that they don't think they're funny. It's good to know I'm not the only one. Right now I think I'm funny, and hope I will think so for the rest of my career, but there have been times when I KNEW that I wasn't funny. It turns out I was wrong, or rather that I was capable of being funny. Because if you don't think you are funny, no one else will either. And by the way, the person who asked me if they are funny, is very funny.

Aug 21 - Java Source
I'm starting to like this place. If you haven't been here in a while, you should check it out. Real audience members, and a real nice diverse crowd.

Aug 24 - Luggage Store
The were actual audience members. Unfortunately they were all gone by the time I went on. The more I perform, the greedier I am getting about having an audience. It's an ego thing of course, but without these egos we wouldn't be here. The main reason I wanted an audience tonight, I'll describe in my next entry.

Aug 25 - Internet Tonight, ZDTV
Yes folks, tonight our hero and humble narrator, made his national television debut! YEEHAW! Folks, do whatever you can within legality and your conscience to promote yourself. I didn't get this opportunity because I'm the funniest comedian in the world, though someday I will be, but by coming up with a clever way of promoting myself on the web. It caught the attention of a writer for the show, and fellow comedian. They did a blurb on me and had me go to the studio and perform a short routine. It was alot of fun. I got so nervous that I haven't had a solid bowel movement in three days.

I also want to take this chance to thank everyone involved in the show. Everyone went out of their way to make me feel at home. Thank you.
