November 99

Nov 1 - Cobbs
My first trip to Cobbs. That may seem weird, but hey, wrestling is on Monday nights!
Nice club. Smaller than the punchline. Crowd was mostly tourists. It was interesting because many of the comedians do jokes that only a local would understand. It alienated the audience on several instances. Another thing that alienated the audience was comedians using notes. Not just a quick glance either. Come on people! Notes are OK for coffee house gigs, where the audience is only other comics, but paying audiences expect better. I know that the audience knows that we have rehearsed our material, but using notes breaks the illusion of a conversation with the audience.

Nov 4 - Brainwash
Went up late, but had a pretty good set. I'm just getting over a very bad cold, so my delivery wasn't the best. Got some laughs though.

Nov 6 - Java Source
The audience was all comedians so I tried a few ideas. Almost none of them worked. By the end I was just telling people about Reno, hoping that something funny would emerge. Mostly it didn't.

Nov 6 - Mock Cafe
Big audience tonight. I got some good laughs, but my set had no flow, and I never connected with them on a personal level. Do I sound like I'm being too hard on myself? I'm not. I know what I'm capable of, and anything less than that is unacceptable.

Nov 12 - One World Cafe
Haven't been here in a while. Nice crowd. Did better at connecting with people tonight. Wrote the set ten minutes before the show though, so it was a bit rough.

Nov 12 - Thoughts
OK you've heard it before and you'll hear it again. Never give up. I've been a bit discouraged lately in my dealings with the big clubs in town. But suddenly I have a paying corporate gig, a potential paying club spot, and a few potential showcase spots, that will give me great exposure. I'm still a few years away from quitting my day job, but it feels good to be making some progress.
Also; It continues to amaze me. I didn't get any of these gigs because I'm funnier than any other comedian. All of them came about because I was able to promote myself to the venues/promoters.
